Outdoor and Environmental Tutor/Instructor

Contract: March – November 2018  in the first instance

Salary: £15,808 - £17,290 p.a. (£8 - £8.75 per hr) dependant on experience & qualifications. Single accommodation available.  22 days holiday per annum pro rata, plus lieu days for Bank Holidays worked, holiday to be taken in line with business needs.

This post involves a flexible working pattern, which will include evenings and occasional weekends.

 

Centre Purpose

Simonsbath House Outdoor Centre, set in 4 acres of grounds, provides a wide range of activities for clients from 6 – adult. You will be expected to regularly lead and assist with learning opportunities for young people mainly in the 7 – 13yrs age range. Each programme is tailored to meet group requirements and the individual needs and abilities within the group. The centre actively supports the delivery of the curriculum and assists all groups with their programme of personal and social development and delivery of the citizenship agenda. We encourage students to learn through the outdoor experience to discover more about themselves their peers and adults working with them.

Activities include: mountain biking, climbing wall, tree climb, high ropes elements, assault course, archery, group development through problem solving , mountain boarding, grass sledging, map work, compass and orienteering, stream scramble, circus workshop & slack line, climbing traverse & boulder, up and over team challenge wall, camp craft skills including shelter building, woodland survival games and camouflage and Indian Tracker, using steels , cooking on an open fire, river study, guided walks and environmental activities.

 

Job Purpose

To work as part of the Simonsbath House Team delivering Outdoor Education courses to residential and day visiting groups. To assist with the community programme of activities for local children and those on holiday in the area. To work with adult groups leading walks and activities. To contribute to the overall daily running of Simonsbath House.

Main Areas of Responsibility

     To work directly with groups of young people, setting up and leading a range of outdoor
and adventurous activities & curriculum focused fieldwork activities to
develop their personal, social and academic education. To ensure these programmes and activities promote and encourage participation and
responsibility.
§ 
To be responsible for the climbing elements including setting up and taking down
of session equipment, monitoring of equipment, record keeping and end of year
report for Centre Manager and external MIA.
§ 
To undertake maintenance and repair of centre equipment as and when necessary.
§  To work directly with the adult guests setting up and leading
walking holidays and single guided walks and contribute to other special
interest breaks offered by the Centre and Hotel
§ 
Toinstruct groups in the safe procedures and careful usage of equipment
§  To contribute to the development of Simonsbath House as an outdoor
working environment.
§  To undertake the administration necessary to ensure the smooth
running of programmes or
activities, services and facilities.
§  To undertake on-going health and safety risk assessments and
equipment/facilities monitoring records in connection with teaching and other
areas of responsibility (inc. climbing elements)  and inform centre management if danger is
identified.
§  To undertake domestic & supervisory duties ensuring the safety
and security of residents and facilities.      
To contribute to the overall aims of Simonsbath
House and assist in the other areas of the business as required.

 

Knowledge, Experience and Training

* Hard working and energetic
* Have good organisational and communication skills
* Have a love of the outdoors and instructing in the outdoors

§ A degree in a relevant discipline (Geography, Environmental Science or Outdoor Education based degree) plus National Governing Body qualifications in activities offered by Simonsbath House Outdoor Centre for example GNAS, TCL/ MBLA, BOF, ML, Summer ML, WGL/Hill and Moorland Leader

§ CWA minimum with climbing experience, SPA preferred

§ Willing to undertake appropriate training.

§ Have an understanding of development needs of young people

§ Experience of outdoor and environmental education in a school or centre setting

§ First Aid qualification

§ A professional manner when working with groups and dealing with queries and problems that arise on site.

§ Confidence in working both in a team and independently and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills

 

This post involves a flexible-working pattern, which will include evening and some weekend work.

(Salary based on 38 hour week, anticipated hours during residential weeks 41hr per week, during non residential

weeks 35hrs per week. (Any additional hours worked to be taken as lieu hours in non residential weeks).

Single accommodation is available & meals provided whilst on duty. Own transport is required.

Placements/Work Experience

 

Simonsbath House Outdoor Centre is pleased to offer students work experience weeks during the Spring, Summer and Autumn terms.

The student will be offered free board and lodging for the duration of their work placement and will be expected to fully take part in the daily operations of the Centre.

We will offer the opportunity to work alongside experienced colleagues, assisting with activities and supporting the work of the Centre, setting up equipment, supervising pupils and helping with the domestic elements of running a busy Centre.

Students must be min 17yrs old
